Generic Light Shapers

Umbrellas

Umbrellas are the backbone of many photographers’ toolboxes, understandably so, because they are easy to work with and ideal to bring to location. Profoto Umbrellas are made to the same exact standards we apply to all our light modifiers. Available in 18 unique versions and made with high-quality fabrics and surface-treated metallic elements, Profoto Umbrellas provide a superior light and last for many years.

Umbrella Deep

All of Profoto’s deep umbrellas have a deeper parabolic shape compared with the average umbrella. The deeper the shape, the better control you have of the light spread. It also allows you to focus and shape light by simply sliding the umbrella shaft backward or forward in its holder.

Umbrella Shallow

A master of portability and ease-of-use, the Umbrella Shallow is the go-to light modifier when you need a soft light with wide light spread. It’s lightweight and fast to set up, and takes up very little space in your bag when folded.

Which shape?

A deeper shape gives you more precise control of the light spread – a more focused light with less stray light. It also provides the possibility of a greater zoom effect than you’ll find in the shallow version. However, the shallow shape offers more light spread, which is useful if you want to achieve an evenly lit background.

Which fabric?

The Silver creates a very crisp, direct light with more contrast and a high light output, a little like the light you’d get from a hard reflector. The White reflects a more natural, softer light. Translucent umbrellas are used to shoot through and they diffuse and soften the light by reducing contrast. Translucent umbrellas are perfect for creating soft light when you’re very close to your subject.

Which size?

The sizes range from the smallest 85 cm (2.8′) to the extra-large 165 cm (5.4′). The size affects the softness and spread of light. Think of it like this – the larger the umbrella the softer the light will be. Also, a larger umbrella will create an even illumination over a larger area, which is good for full length or group portraits.

Collapsible reflectors

Profoto Collapsible Reflectors probably represent light shaping in its most uncomplicated form. They are easy to use, easy to carry and can be used for bouncing or diffusing sunlight as well as flash. The sturdy yet collapsible metal frame is equipped with two ergonomically shaped handles, which make the reflectors easy to fold and hold in various positions.

Available in no less than ten different versions. Four types of two-sided reflectors are available: Silver/White, SunSilver/White, Gold/White and Black/White. There is also a translucent screen that can be used as a diffuser. Each of these is available in medium and large.

Which fabric?

The White reflects the light the most naturally. The Silver increases the light output and creates more contrast and crisper colors. The Gold creates a warmer light. And the SunSilver creates warmth that’s less intense than the Gold, but with a slightly higher output and more contrast. The Black can be used to flag off light and eliminate unwanted light, and the Translucent reflector acts more like a diffuser bringing a softer light with less contrast.

Which size?

If you mostly shoot people portraits of just one person or head-and-shoulder the Medium sized is the most practical option. If you’re shooting a couple or a group portrait then the Large sized is a good option since it gives you a larger area of light reflecting towards your subjects.
